The Tattoo Highway "Mascot"

Our signature Snake is shown here on the wall in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where I first encountered it in December, '98.

I like the rough vitality of folk art, wall art, graffiti etc., and was particularly taken with this mysterious fellow. No one seemed to know who had painted him, or what he signified. So I took his photo and moved on.

When I was putting together TH2000, Indelible Marks, "the Mexican snake" ended up decorating the main table of contents. No particular reason except that I liked the image, and I needed a tall narrow graphic.

It was only later that it occurred to me that visually the Snake is a Tattoo(ed) Highway. We've been using it ever since.

Serendipity lives!
